Vil had practiced voodoo since he was a child. This is quite normal for people living in Haiti. So when all of his children became ill, Vil turned to the only spiritual leader he knew. He took his four children to a local commune that housed the voodoo priest.
The priest called upon demonic spirits to heal the children. He worshipped the spirits asking them to answer his prayers. But when you mix voodoo, Haitian folklore, spiritism with a sprinkle of traditional beliefs, you end up with a "religion" that satisfies no one. As a result, the condition of each of the children only worsened.
Vil did not know what to do. He had heard of a group of Christians who lived nearby. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Vil called upon these Christians to help save his children.
God was faithful. Each of Vil's children recovered fully.
Now that Vil's attention was focused upon God and he had experienced God's goodness, he decided to investigate all he could about the One who heard his prayers.
The Bible League-trained believer who had prayed for Vil's children invited Vil to study the Bible—the Book of this God who answered his prayers. Vil accepted and joined this man in the Bible study. It was the first time he had ever read a Bible.
"Now I am committed to the Lord Jesus because one man came and helped me study God’s Word,” says Vil. "All of my family have come to Christ and now have been trained to lead Bible studies. We thank God for this ministry."
God has welcomed a man and a family into His kingdom. Now this changed family is taking the Word of God into their voodoo-filled community.
Bible League strategically partners with churches to help meet the spiritual needs of people worldwide. Through intentional discipleship, carried out in Bible study groups (rather than by randomly handing out Bibles), seekers, who complete a Bible study, receive their own Bible.
