Tothe neighbours in her Hispanic community, Laura's marriage looked happy and secure. But it was not the truth. Behind the scenes there was constant fighting in a careless relationship.
"It was getting worse every day," says Laura. "We would constantly argue about any little thing."
The change was subtle over the years. Neither Laura nor her husband could tell exactly when it started but the distance between them became more evident. Both felt the emptiness that grew. Laura would express her frustration in violent rages, throwing things around the house. "My days were filled with anger, tears and sadness," says Laura. "My daily words were— 'God, if you are there, please do something!' " she cries out to God.
Laura took her cares to her sister-in-law who had completed a Bible study through Bible League. Many times they prayed together but it was not enough. Until she got on her knees and desperately sought God for relief, things changed.
"I asked Him to take away all the awful feelings I felt and to change everything, starting with me," Laura recalls. "I don't know how long I stayed in the room crying and talking to God but when I stood up, the burden was lighter. After that experience in prayer, my sister-in-law suggested I go to church and read the Word of God. I took her advice because I did not want to lose the sense of peace I had felt."
Laura was given the Gospel of John to read and her life began to make sense. God's Word had begun to mend the years spent in anger and deep emotional pain.
"God gave me a new heart and a new marriage," Laura says. "I have discovered the love that God has for me. It was always there but I just couldn't see it before. Our marriage has improved and now my husband is attending church with me and our five children."
“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.” |
