God’s Word is a source of hope for Christians. In a country of strife and tension, people are coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus and they are deepening their faith every day as they study God’s Word. The Project Philip Bible study program not only impacts people, it also impacts churches.
“We like Project Philip because it is an easy, simple and practical way of making contacts and discipling new believers,” says Pastor Aleida. “This program has brought in family, friends and acquaintances of people who already are church members.
There was one family who were at the point of disintegration the first time I met them. But after studying just one Bible study lesson, the father of this family was drawn to God's Word and he waited anxiously each day for the following Bible study lesson,” says the pastor. After completing the Bible study, the whole family accepted Christ as their Saviour.
The illiterate "read" God's Word
Bible League in Colombia also offers a literacy program that follows the Project Philip Bible study lessons.
Illiterate people are taught how to read using a series of booklets that are designed around Scripture and Bible study with the support of the literacy materials.
Once they finish the first booklet they receive a certificate along with an illustrated New Testament. They would then continue with the second booklet.
When they finish the whole program they would receive a large print Bible, along with a certificate during their graduation service.
“These graduation services are very special. In order to graduate from the program the student has to read in a public worship service a portion of Scripture,” says the National Director.
"There are no words to describe the feeling one has when you see a person who did not know how to read, now read God’s Word for the first time in front of the entire congregation. Last year, 454 people learned to read through this program in Colombia," he exclaims.
Guerrillas and paramilitaries in Colombia continue to attack rural evangelical churches and schools or kill pastors, mistaking them for oppositional political fronts.
Moreover, the mixture of Christian religious teachings—heavy on ritual and light on Biblical truth, with traditional superstitutions—is culturally harassing many Evangelical Christians.
