Day 2 - VIETNAM

Nguyen grew up in the tradition of ancestor worship. Dedicated to his faith, Nguyen would often travel long distances to temples, where he would fast twice a month and burn incense upon the altars of idols, hoping to obtain blessings.

Everyday Nguyen works hard to earn a living. Yet, his family was very poor because he would spend his earnings on alcohol. There was never enough money to buy daily food. Whenever he was drunk, he would beat his wife and children. His behaviour left the family destitute.

Nguyen admits to a life of self-indulgence. “I would only think of myself and enjoy the things that I was interested in,” Nguyen says. “The only thing that mattered to me was my pleasure. My wife and children seemed didn’t matter. This habit of selfish living was a second nature to me. I couldn’t stop it, even if I wanted to,” says Nguyen. “Sometimes, after a night of boozing, I would regain my senses and think about my family’s hardships. Deep down I knew why they were always filled with sorrow.”

One day, Nguyen got a serious illness that caused him to become bedridden. He felt lonely and empty. No one came to see him—not even his drinking buddies.

asia_churchWhen the pastor of a local church heard of his illness, he visited him and this brought comfort to Nguyen. When the illness was cured, Nguyen invited the pastor to his house and he listened intently to the Gospel.

“I responded immediately. I repented from my selfish life and accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour,” says Nguyen.

Since then, Nguyen’s life has been transformed. “Now I crave God's Word and I apply everything I learned from the Bible study. Finally, my family has joy and hope.”

As for the powers that once bound him to alcohol and idol worship, Nguyen says, “By the power of God, I gave up drinking. I am able to diligently take care of my family. I know that I have a place in my Father’s kingdom; therefore, I must live a new life in Christ. I am now a child of God!”

The Word of God is powerful. Praise God that the truth of the Gospel is setting people free from their bondage to sin. Your prayers and gifts bring God’s Word to where the spiritual hunger is growing and the need for Bibles is great.

Vietnam

In 2006, a landmark decision made Vietnam the first country ever to be removed from the United States Department of State's list of "countries of particular concern" for religious repression.

However, the government has been slow with further church registration. More than 500 out of 1,072 unrecognised evangelical churches applied for registration, only six received permission. Please pray for a breakthrough in this situation.
