Australia—Walkers unite to provide "treasure"
Last weekend on Saturday 31st March, Christians from many different denominations in Sydney and Launceston took part in Bible League’s second WALK4BIBLES event, to help provide Bibles for Christians in China. Like those who took part in Melbourne, by participating, each walker demonstrated that the Bible is important—to own and read a Bible is vital.
“There are people in this world who don’t have Bibles and are really missing out on such a treasure and we need to do something,” says Peter from Sydney.
“Having a Bible is such a privilege. It makes me sad to think that others don’t have access to Bibles,” says Nonie also from Sydney.
“I’ve learned heaps from the Bible. So I really want to help more Christians get their hands on God’s Word,” adds Toby from Sydney.
All agreed it was time well spent. Jess from Sydney University walked with friends. “It’s a great way of serving God by raising money for Bibles, for our brothers and sisters in China who can’t get hold of a Bible,” she says.
Michelle and Martin from Sydney turned their walk into a run. “It’s an event where the church can combine, regardless of denomination and bless our brothers and sisters in China. It’s not much time out of our lives but we can impact the lives of so many,” says Martin.
Grahame Smith, the National Director for Bible League, was greatly moved by the response. “It’s encouraging to see Christians acknowledging the importance of the Bible and partnering with Bible League to make it available to Christians who don’t have a Bible,” says Grahame.
Each $7.00 raised through WALK4BIBLES will place one Bible into the hands of a persecuted Christian in China. “To date, current donations have provided 3,621 Bibles for China through WALK4BIBLES. Each Bible may be shared by a family, Bible study group or even a church. Bible League provides Bibles in remote and rural areas where Christians have no other way of getting one,” adds Grahame.
The good news is that people can still join in and WALK4BIBLES or sponsor a walker. The four remaining WALK4BIBLES events are in Brisbane, Hobart, Perth and Toowoomba. For registration information or to see and hear interviews from walkers visit: www.bibleleague.com.au.
