WALK4BIBLES: Event mushrooms into local communities
WALK4BIBLES expanded into local communities as churches and individuals hosted their own ecumenical walkathon events.
Churches in Esperance Western Australia, in Nunawading Victoria, in Queenstown on Tasmania’s West Coast, in Wyndham Victoria and in Gosford New South Wales have all given their localised WALK4BIBLES event the thumbs up.
Warren (Wazza) Harvey from Gum Tree Christian Fellowship in Esperance organised a combined churches WALK4BIBLES event on Sunday, April 26 with two buses—the "time out" bus for refreshment and the other "boost bus" for groups to gather and pray for persecuted Christians around the world.
“We had around 70 walkers. It was great weather and we had a few different churches involved,” Wazza said. “We believe each person will raise an average of 7 Bibles per walker.”
On the other side of Australia, in Tasmania’s historic mining town of Queenstown, Rev. Jim Webster from the West Coast Anglican Church organised a WALK4BIBLES for the local churches on Saturday, May 31.
“So far we have raised funds for about 200 Bibles and there is still money to come in,” Rev. Webster said. “We had 28 walkers and it was a wonderful day of fellowship. We were all really happy and all enjoyed the walk.
“It was a great ecumenical event. It has been a really good event for group fellowship and it has caused inspiration amongst the churches.”
National Director of Bible League Australia, Grahame Smith, said it is fantastic that churches and Christian individuals are becoming involved in hosting their own WALK4BIBLES events.
“Although Bible League hosts WALK4BIBLES in seven different locations around Australia, these locations are not always accessible to everyone,” he said. “Providing the opportunity for local churches to take ownership of a community-based WALK4BIBLES event has created a great response.
“WALK4BIBLES as a local, community event is something we will see more of in the future. It creates an opportunity for churches in the community to unite and join together for a common cause of providing Bibles to the Bible-less. It’s a fun community event which is suitable for all ages and transcends denominations. Thank you to everyone who took part.”
