HAITI—Bibles needed to fight spiritual battle

Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince recently erupted in violence as scores of people protested against soaring food prices in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, where 80 percent of the population struggle to survive on less than US $2 a day.

Aside from the physical hunger and recent violence, there is a deep spiritual battle in Haiti.

Haitians credit the country’s independence and “freedom” to a voodoo pact that was made with the devil. At least half the population practices voodoo.

The national director of Bible League in Australia, Grahame Smith, said God’s Word is desperately needed to bring the message of salvation to people in Haiti.

“There is a hunger for peace and freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ,” he said. “Already, God is doing an incredible work in the hearts of Haitians.

“Last year, 125,838 people completed Bible League’s Project Philip Bible studies. Another 12,156 people were trained to lead these Bible studies.

“However, more Bibles are needed, especially Bibles for Children and the New Testament in Creole. As people receive God’s Word, their lives are changed, their families are transformed and in some cases, their communities are too.

“Through the power of the Holy Spirit and through the application of God’s Word, restoration can come to this nation and to its people.”

Pastor Michel, from Haiti, said that before his church adopted Bible League’s Project Philip Bible study program, the church members could barely explain the Gospel because they did not have Bibles.

“Due to Bible League and the trained Philips, 150 new members were added to the church and we now have 2,000 church members,” he said. “Every member at the church owns a Bible and has enough material to study the Bible.”
