Latin America —Bibles needed after violent storms bring carnage to Latin America

Recent storms have ripped through Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, leaving behind a trail of carnage. Lives have been lost and thousands of homes destroyed. But Bible League workers were ready to respond. They provided Bibles to survivors through partner churches in areas of the disaster.

According to Action by Churches Together International (ACT), 118 people have been reported dead after cyclones hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic. More than 66,000 people have been left homeless and 100 communities have been cut off by the swollen rivers.

According to UNICEF, more than one million people have been affected by the floods in Mexico. Arturo Robles, Bible League’s director in Mexico says that many people are still unaccounted for in the floods.

“Many have died; many are still not found and 600,000 people are in emergency shelters,” says Robles. “Many lost their personal Bibles in the flood. We want to get God’s Word back into their hands.”

Rosilio Román, Bible League’s associate director of Latin America ministries says more Bibles are needed to replace those destroyed by the floods.

We want to provide the churches with their Bible needs in this crisis as they minister to people who are struggling through the loss of loved ones and property,” says Román. “Pray with us for the thousands who are homeless after these horrific floods. Pray that people would see Jesus Christ as their only hope.

Pierre Philippe, Bible League’s director in the Dominican Republic, says Bible League offices in Jacmel and Cayes were flooded knee-deep with water.

“All the Bibles and study materials were saved because our staff carried them up to the second floor,” says Philippe. “Please pray for churches that suffered human and property loss.”

Working alongside those bringing physical relief, Bible League-trained workers are bringing God’s hope and comfort to the disaster zone through His Word.
