Australia—New opportunity for Burarra people conduct Bible study in their heart language
Praise God that for the first time, the Burarra-speaking people in the Northern Territory of Australia are studying God’s Word using the Project Philip material, which has been newly translated into the Burarra Aboriginal language by Wycliffe Bible translators, Kathy and Dave Glasgow.
Before 1980, there were only a few Bible portions translated in the Burarra language. Not until 1991 that the New Testament was available. Though the whole Burarra Bible is yet to be completed, more and more Burarra people have believed in Jesus.
Now, among the 600 Burarra-speaking people in the Maningrida settlement, 55 percent are Christians. These Burarra Christians desperately need solid Bible study to help them grow spiritually.
“Engaging people to study God’s Word in their heart language—the only language that they really understand well—is the best way to put God’s Word to work,” says Bible League’s National Director for Australia.
“This supporting Bible study material will be an effective tool for discipleship of the Burarra Christians as well as for evangelism,” he adds.
Preparations are now underway to train a small number of Christians from the Burarra people, who will then lead these Project Philip evangelistic Bible studies in their community. Those who graduate from the Bible study will be presented with a Burarra New Testament that has been sponsored by Bible League.
We are excited about the possibilities of how God’s Word transforming this community. We invite you to pray for these Burarra people, who once are trained, will become Christ’s ambassadors to disciple other Burarra Christians and to evangelise their community.

Some people have questioned why spending so much time and effort to reach a language group that is so small in number.
But as a Wycliffe Bible translator said, what local church would not be happy if through their ministry the Lord used them to bring people, even a few hundred, to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ?
Because of this, for the past 45 years, Bible League has partnered with Wycliffe Bible Translators to make the Scriptures available for those who have never had God’s Word in their heart language. With these Scriptures, many unreached groups have been given the opportunity to read God’s Word for the very first time and be transformed for eternity. |
