Nigeria—New version of Igbo Bible completed
We give thanks to God—the Lord of all nations—for the recent completion of Bible League's revision of the Igbo Bible in Nigeria, following the completion of the revision projects for Hausa Bible in 2003 and the Yoruba Bible in 2006.
Many years ago, Bible League in Nigeria strategically started the Bible translation revision projects for the above three indigenous languages, due to their wide ethno-geographical spread in Nigeria. Each of the current translations is over 75 years old and the languages and spellings are archaic. As language is not static but rather dynamic, these revisions will enable indigenous people to study God’s Word in a language and context that they really understand.
The 18 million Igbo people is the third largest ethnic group in Nigeria. For centuries, the Igbo people practised traditional Igbo religion. They worshipped one powerful god, various spirits of the nature and deities of their ancestors. Christianity started to influence the people during the colonial period in the 1870’s.
Now, 90 percent of the Igbo people are Christians. But reports show that some Christian Igbo still try to incorporate many of their indigenous customs and traditions into the Christian faith.
With an up-to-date translation of the Bible, together with supporting Bible study materials in their heart language, local churches and Bible League-trained workers can help Igbo people to better understand God’s Word and to ground their faith in the truth.
Since 1962, Bible League has partnered with Wycliffe Bible Translators to provide Scriptures in 400 languages in over 60 countries. Yet, there are still 196 million people—2,286 language groups—who are waiting for a Bible in their heart language.
Will you help these people receive their first copy of God’s Word in a language that speak to their heart? Click here to give to support a Bible translation Project.
Since 1962, Bible League has partnered with Wycliffe Bible Translators to make God’s Word available to people—from Albania to Zimbabwe, from remote jungles to mountainous areas—who never before had the Bible in their heart language.
With each new translation completed by Wycliffe’s translators, Bible League publishes these Scriptures and engages people in evangelistic and discipleship Bible study. New believers are baptised and commit themselves to a local church.
The fruits of these transformations are not immediate but are evident in the increasing number of evangelical churches among minority groups. Your prayers and gifts will help these changes to continue.
