PAPUA NEW GUINEA—New Translation Arrives

In the distance, a raft of banana boats, decorated in brightly coloured flowers and balloons glided in unison across the still waters. The boat contained what the 2,000 people on the shore were waiting for—New Testament Bibles in their Ramoaaina heart language.

It was April 15, 2007—a day marked with rejoicing and celebration as after 20 years the Bak Taabu Matakin (Ramoaaina New Testament) translation was arriving.

It was an unforgettable moment for SIL/ Wycliffe Bible Translators, Robyn, from Australia, and Lisbeth, from Sweden. Since 1988 they had been living in Molot, a village on the northern side of the Duke of York Islands, translating the Greek and English New Testaments into the Ramoaaina language.

Robyn says it was “truly a history-making event” as the crowds gathered in anticipation to see the arrival of the New Testament.

“At last we were giving these people God’s Word, the true words that bring them life,” says Robyn. “What better gift could we give?

“Many people have told us how happy they are with their New Testaments and how clear the meaning is.”

That day, 1,200 New Testaments were taken and many more people are continuing to receive and read God’s Word.

In partnering with Wycliffe Bible Translators, the Swedish Alliance Mission together with Bible League Australia were  able to fully fund the translation work for the Buk Taabu Matakin New Testament in the Ramoaaina language.
