Growing number of secret believers

In the early morning hours, they slip through the clandestine tunnels leading to secret meeting places. There they meet the whole day, studying the Bible together and quietly worshipping the Lord. If detected, they could be fined, beaten, arrested or imprisoned.

They are China’s house church Christians—believers infused with a passion for the Gospel message—and they are growing upwards of 100 million. These Christians meet in unregistered house churches because they believe it offers more “freedom” to worship and serve God.

According to some estimates, the number of house church Christians is growing by seven to nine million per year—despite the price they pay for their faith. The more the persecution increases, the more the numbers of new believers grows.

Pastor Wa (not his real name) is a house church leader who has used Bible League’s Scriptures in his ministry. He’s now serving three years in prison, simply for sharing about his faith and God’s Word. Right now he’s the prison barber, sharing about Jesus Christ with others as he cuts their hair. Hundreds have come to faith in Christ as a result.

Though China’s government prints Bibles, some which are for export, the quantity falls far short of the need generated by China’s burgeoning number of house church Christians. Most of China’s house churches are in rural areas, where often 70-100 believers share one Bible.
