MYANMAR: Equipping believers to share the Gospel

Christians in Myanmar have suffered abuse and oppression at the hands of ruling military regimes for decades.

The Government is staunchly Buddhist and monitors and restricts Christian meetings and activities. The military continues to kill and attack thousands of Christians from the Karen and Karenni minority groups on ethnic and political grounds.

However, the number of Christians in Myanmar continues to grow, especially among previously animist and ethnic minority groups. According to Operation World, almost 14 percent of the population in Myanmar are Christians.

Bible League is supporting Christian churches in Myanmar by providing Bibles, Bible study materials and training—equipping them to fulfill the Great Commission and growing them towards spiritual maturity.

Pha, who is from the Karen people group, said Bible League’s evangelical and discipleship training has equipped him to share the Gospel with others—something he had been longing to do.

“The Bible League sent two coordinators to conduct Project Philip training days in our church,” he said. “We learnt evangelism, discipleship and cell group formation and we went out to the neighbouring areas for evangelism. Two of my animist friends came to Christ. I and my church members are very active now. We preach the gospel everywhere.”

Another Karen Christian, Sai, had been a Christian for 20 years and had never understood evangelism. He also took part in the Project Philip training in his village.

“It was such a great joy,” he said. “After three days training, I regularly went out to preach to my friends. Bible League appointed me to lead a [Bible study] of five people. I have several new converts now. I am very happy now and I thanked Bible League for this great opportunity to make our local church a missionary church. We love the New Testaments given to us and we read the Bible every day. Thank you all.”
